SOPFC Free Agents on the pitch

Looking for a team to play for? Captains are looking for you too!

Free Agents are players actively looking to join a team. Our goal is to connect Free Agents and Captains, so everyone wins.

How to Join a Team

1. Register as a Free Agent

Click the "Free Agent" button for each day you're available to play - it's free to register! Captains looking for players will invite you if they think you're a good fit for their team, so be on the lookout for an invitation email.

2. Join our next Teamup event

Teamup is a one-night event where SOPFC places you on a team of other Free Agents to play two refereed league games. Meet other Free Agents, see exactly how league games work, and link up with others to start a team in one of our leagues.

3. Post in our "Free Agents & Captains" group

Post your desired league(s), skill level, days available, preferred position(s), and/or experience in our Facebook group. Captains will comment or message you if they think you're a good fit for their team.

4. DM teams on Instagram

We've heard that Captains/Admins are often pretty responsive to players reaching out directly with interest to join their team. Might be a good idea to follow our account (since we re-share team stories and calls for players), as well as any teams you think might be a good fit.

5. Join our pickup sessions

Captains and current players often play in our pickup games, so come out to a session and meet other players! If you'd like help getting connected, let the Field Manager know you're looking for a team - they may know which players are recruiting.

6. Start your own team

You control your own destiny! Only you can make it happen! If you want something done right, do it yourself! And other cliches. But seriously, it's a lot easier than you think to get 8-12 other ppl together to start a team, mostly because we have a pool of so many ppl just like you RIGHT NOW, all looking for a team. Click the "Team" button for the league you want (it's free to create the team), and after you’re done registering, click the "Recruit Free Agents" button on your Manage Team page to browse and invite Free Agents to join your team.

Free Agent FAQ

What is a Free Agent signup?

Free Agents are players who don't have a team yet but are looking to play on one. Every season we connect players who sign up as Free Agents with Captains who are looking for additional players for their team - it's a win-win! When you click the "Free Agent" button on a league, you will be asked to describe yourself and what type of team you're looking for. Captains from that league will then be able to view this info and invite you to join their team. It does not cost anything to sign up for the Free Agent pool; you will only be asked to pay your share of team dues if you agree to join a team.

When could I expect to be invited to join a team?

It all depends how many Captains are looking for players during that particular season, in the specific league you signed up for as a Free Agent. Typically, as the league Signup Deadline approaches, Captains more actively recruit Free Agents to join their team. But the sooner you sign up, the better your chances are of being invited to join a team, since some Captains begin building their roster early on. If you are available on multiple days, be sure to sign up as a Free Agent for EVERY day you're open to playing (that means you'll click the "Free Agent" button and fill out your information multiple times potentially).

My friend and I both want to play and sign up together, but only if we’re on the same team. How can we do that?

When you sign up as a Free Agent, be sure to include info or details about friends you may want to play with. Captains are often looking for several new players, so this could help your chances of being invited to join a team.

What type of footwear is recommended?

In general, we recommend regular molded grass cleats for our artificial grass turf fields. However, players are free to wear any boot they'd like, as long as they don't have metal studs. Some players wear turf cleats, a few even wear flats. Our artificial grass fields are fairly thick (like real grass) and have a rubber pellet base.

Are shin guards required?

Shin guards are recommended for both leagues and pickup, but they are not a requirement to play.

What color shirt should I wear?

After you have been invited to join a team, your Captain will advise you what color shirt to wear to games.

I’m not sure if I should play, I’m not that good…

While at least a tiny bit of experience playing soccer is recommended even for our lower divisions (even if it was way back in 6th grade), by no means do you have to be "good"! Our Coed leagues, and the lower divisions in our Open leagues, are very accommodating to players without much experience, players with no experience but who are either athletic or willing to put forth their best effort, or those who haven't played in a while. And the club atmosphere in general is welcoming and friendly.

I want to play, but I may have to miss a game because of work/vacation/etc.

If you have to miss a game or two, no problem. Captains typically carry extra people on their rosters since not everyone will be able to make the game every week. However, if you need to miss more than half the season, it’s probably best to pick another league.
